If Everyone found their WHY, then we’d feel fulfilled by our work Most people if you asked them to not think that they love their work, or enjoy working everyday. People think that it is a waste of time to find the job of their dreams. We need to find something that we believe in. We need a WHY in our lives. The WHY is something in our lives that gives us a deeper meaning, and keeps us focused and driven towards finding that why. Simon Sinek’s goal is to lead others to find their own WHY. His goal is to inspire everyone to do what excites them. All we need to do is to stick to a few key principles that will help us find our WHY. His message focuses on inspiring ourselves and others to change the world and find our own WHY. To change the world, we must start with ourselves.
If you want to motivate others; don’t Manipulate, Captivate! Most businesses and organizations stick with the same ideas and strategies to motivate and give incentives to their employees. Good managers don’t resort to rewards or punishments; instead, they inspire others. We follow others because we feel compelled to do so. Enthusiastic employees recognize the deeper meaning in their actions, and see purpose and are determined to make their work a reality. Do not simply hire someone because they need a job, hire people that believe what you believe. When you hire people that believe what you believe, they will be loyal to you and put in their blood and sweat and tears. There is no better example of this then with the wright brothers. Everyone during the day was trying to fly and create a design that could get people off the ground. Why did your product/company fail? People give the same things of being undercapitalized or that they just didn't have the right people. Samuel Pierpont Langley was given 50,000 dollars to come up with this flying machine, and he was well connected. Everyone was rooting for Langley. But why have we never heard of Samuel Pierpont Langley? In Dayton Ohio… The Wright brothers; they had no money, and paid for their dream from the revenue they got from their bicycle shop. They were driven by a cause, a purpose and a belief. They believed that if they could figure out this flying machine, that it could change the course of the world and transportation. Langley only sought to be rich and famous; he failed to see the why, and the importance of flying for the world. The people that knew the Wright brothers WHY, worked with loyalty, with all their blood, sweat and tears to make flying a reality that could change the course of the world. On December 17, 1903; The Wright Brothers took flight, and the rest of the world was not there to witness it, and found out about it a few days later. The day he heard that the Wright brothers had taken flight, he quit. Find people that know their WHY and believe in the same things you do. If you want to lead and motivate others: Know the Golden Circle! The Golden circle consists of three concentric circles… The why is the smallest circle in the middle, followed by the how, and the what as the outermost circle. The WHAT is the thing you are selling or manufacturing. The HOW is the way the WHAT is achieved; the way a product gets to market. The WHY is the mission of the business or the organization. A few years ago, Simon Sinek made a discovery that changed his life. It turns out that there is a pattern for all the great leaders and innovators of the world. They all think, act and communicate the exact same way to get others to see their dreams and make them a reality. Simon Sinek introduces the golden circle; which includes the why, how and what of leaders and organizations and how they inspire the people they affect. All the companies and corporations in the world know what they are selling to a given market. Some know how they sell their product and get it out to the market. Very few know the why. Why they sell their product, why the do the things they do, why they are motivated; why the organization exists; why people get out of bed in the morning, and why anyone should care. We go from the outside in; from what we are trying to sell or achieve; how we achieve that; and the why behind everything. All inspired leaders and organizations act from the inside out. They start with their why, and then everything else falls into place. Usually in the world, we say what we do, then we say why we are different or better, and then we expect people to buy our product. Apple communicates in a different way which inspires people to buy their product. “Everything we do, we believe in thinking differently… The way we challenge every other technology is that we make beautifully designed products which /are simple to use and user friendly; We just happen to make great computers… Want to buy one?” “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it!” Apple's competitors are all equally qualified to sell products to compete with Apple. The goal is to do business with people who believe what you believe. It’s all grounded with biology, not psychology. The human brain is split up into 3 major components which correlate perfectly with the golden circle. The neocortex corresponds with the what level, and focuses on rational and analytical thought and language. The middle two sections make up our limbic brains- which are responsible for all of our feelings. Things like trust and loyalty. It has no capacity for language. Going from the outside in, people can see many features and facts and figures, but none of this drives behavior. Going from the inside-out, we communicate directly with emotion and feeling. This is where our gut and decisions come from. IF you think that you feel something in your heart or in your soul, Sinek is saying that we actually feel it in the limbic brain which controls decision making. How can people become loyal and want to be a part of what it is you are trying to convey or do. The goal is to sell to people who believe what you believe. Only the WHY gives us a sense of purpose or belonging in our world. The WHAT is strictly informational, and it does not speak deeply to our mind, heart and soul. People in leadership positions always explain why things are done. In this way, workers feel like they have a sense of belonging and want to do something for the business or company to give back to the cause. Start with the core of the Golden Circle, and work your way out from WHY to HOW and finally WHAT you are trying to achieve. Businesses and corporations that start with WHY are more stable Excited followers are the most loyal, and with a WHY the product could end up changing the world. Harley Davidson has gained a loyal and strong base of followers and customers over the last hundred years. Businesses with a cleaner WHY can ignore the competition, focusing on selling an idea first, and then selling a product. In an atmosphere of trust, employees feel the urge to innovate and progress the WHY and the image of the company. The hardest part isn’t finding the WHY, but it is staying true to the WHY and keeping it alive. People don’t buy WHAT you do, they buy WHY you do it!!! With the Law of Diffusion and Innovation, we learn that if we want mass market success… You can’t have it until you reach the tipping point of 15-18% of the market being affected by your idea or creation. You have to close the gap and cross the chasm… The early majority will not try something unless someone else has tried it first. The innovators and the early adopters are driven by what they believe about the world, instead of just seeing what product is available. People want to be first- the first to adopt something; the first to try a new idea or product that could change the world for the better. What you do is manifestation of what you believe. “If you’re a person that wants to have total control of their life; boy, do we have a product for you.” What you do is that proof of what you believe and your purpose. Martin Luther King had a gift… He didn’t go around telling people what needed to change in America; he told people what HE BELIEVED. People who believed what he believed… They took his cause and his purpose and they internalized it. They told people, and those people told people… This news spread to more and more people who also believed in his dream. Two-hundred and fifty thousand people showed up on the correct day, at the correct time and the correct place. They did this without social media, or great news coverage to spread the word. It was all done by the common belief in Martin Luther King’s WHY, and his Purpose. These people didn’t show up for Martin Luther King, but the message he had…. It spoke to themselves; it was something they believed in, so they put all their loyalty in the belief of Martin Luther King. Doctor King believed that there was two kinds of laws in this world, and those were the laws of the higher authority, and those that are made by man. He said that until the laws of God and man are the same, we cannot live in a just world. The Civil Rights movement was the perfect thing to bring his cause of changing the laws of man to life.
Those who lead; They inspire us… They do not seek a position of power. They seek to lead and direct us towards finding our why. We follow those who lead because we want to… It is for ourselves. Their message speaks directly to us.
